Fancy Diamonds What to Look for
Fancy Diamonds: What Should You Look For?
If you have dreamed of owning a fancy diamond and are intending to add one to your collection of jewelry, then it is important to understand the difference in assessing a fancy diamond’s value versus a colorless diamond. Fancy diamonds are extremely rare, occurring quite seldom in nature, so it’s important to note that the color is the most important criteria in the fancy diamond category. One should look for diamonds that are natural and have not been exposed to artificial coloring techniques, such as dyes and irradiation, as this would greatly impact the value of your diamond in a negative way.
Grading the Color in a Fancy Diamond
Fancy diamonds have a scale this is used for their color. The color is graded from faint to fancy deep, with the gradations as follows: Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Dark and Fancy Deep. The darker the color, the more rare and valuable the fancy diamond is.
Considering Other Criteria After Color
After the color grading, the next criteria that is most important in the fancy diamond category is the carat as larger fancy diamonds are even rarer than small ones. From there, one would then consider Clarity, Cut then Shape.
When buying a fancy diamond, be sure to find one that you love, and which has the color you feel you can appreciate for many years to come. After all, the color you choose is something that may not go with everything you own, unlike a colorless diamond.

BrierRose Says:
Okay, so what is the color gradation of the focal stone in The Hope Diamond? It looks to me like the color of the Mediterranean Sea, which is one of the most gorgeous blues there are, but I don’t know what gradation that would be.
