Opal Shopping

Posted by Daily Jewelry On April - 3 - 2012

What to Consider When Buying Opals
Unlike other gemstones, opals include a wide variety of colors and patterns. Types of opals include: black, crystal, boulder, milky, solid, inlay, doublet and triplet. Interestingly enough, the largest source of opal in the world is Australia with over 90% of the world’s supply originating there. Opal is made from silica spheres, and the variety of it makes it a favorite among women who collect opal jewelry.

The Basics about Opals
Among opals, black is the most valued and is highly prized because of its deep, dark color. Crystal opal is very translucent and is appreciated for its lovely sparkly appearance. Milky opals are adored for their pale color and just happen to be the most common. Solid, inlay, doublet and triplet refer to the opals size and whether it was big enough to set as one piece or was small and had to be set alongside other pieces in a ring. When shopping for opals, you would consider their size, color, brilliance, and pattern. Generally speaking, the more colors and patterned an opal is the more valuable it is.

Opals can make a wonderful gift for a woman who loves variety and who appreciates the natural beauty of gemstones. When buying an opal, always depend upon a reputable dealer or site, as well as some additional knowledge that we hope you can pick up here on the Internet or at your local jewelry store.
