Pearl Care: What’s Best For Your Pearls?
Keeping your pearls in tip top shape is of utmost importance especially if they are a treasured piece of jewelry which you intend to hand down to your children someday. It need only heed a few tips to help keep them looking beautifully from year to year.
Don’t expose your pearls to harsh chemicals or detergents.
While your pearls did originally come from fairly robust sea water that doesn’t make them resistant to chemicals and detergents. The surface of a pearl is quite delicate and if you want to preserve the original surface luster, it is best to be as gentle as possible with them. Don’t wash them in harsh chemicals or detergents, especially if they are not intended for fine jewelry. Gritty detergents especially can do great damage to the surface of your pearls.
Keep your pearls stored separately from other jewelry.
For best upkeep of your pearls, store them in a separate pouch away from other jewelry which may have harder surfaces and thus, the potential for scratching your pearls.
Keep your pearls dry, but not overly so.
Don’t expose your pearls to unnecessary moisture. They should be kept away from perfume, water, and any other type of liquid. Should they get wet, dry them off gingerly with a dry, soft textured cloth. While you do want them to stay dry, you don’t want them to be so dry that that they lose all of their moisture. So do not store them in places that retain excessive heat. Like your skin, they need to retain some of their natural moisture to retain their shape and fine appearance.
